A LITTLE BIT OF HINTERLAND HISTORY….
‘Havana House’ and the land surrounding it, is steeped in rich hinterland history. A dwelling that once adorned the site has been almost completely demolished and rebuilt, however part of the outer shell was able to be saved, stripped back and extensively renovated.
The site where Havana House now stands was once the croquet lawn of a vast Montville estate.
In the late 1800’s, “Elston”, a magnificent and sprawling Queenslander homestead was established as the first guesthouse to accommodate visitors in the hinterland region.
It became a popular destination for holiday-makers from the city, was frequented by soldiers on leave from war, and was a favourite of politicians and diplomats of the time.
A tennis court, the croquet pitch and a swimming pool hand-constructed at the base of a waterfall, were huge drawcards for hundreds of visitors to the area for over 70 years.
But in the late 1950's, tragedy struck. A fierce bushfire raged through the area uncontrollably. The guesthouse caught alight and despite desperate attempts to save her, “Elston” sadly burnt to the ground.
Remnants of her existence remain, including the pool (in bushland at the rear of our property), a small outhouse (on the hill above Havana House), pillars of the front fence and a large pecan tree, which was planted especially for guests to enjoy fresh pecan nuts whilst they played croquet on the lawn.
Today, the 140-year-old tree majestically towers over the rear lawn of 'Havana House', bearing masses of pecans each Autumn for guests to still enjoy to this day. Each night, the tree is lit up by lanterns draped over its limbs, as a reminder and testament to the rich history of it’s past.
